“Povestea multor oameni care fascinează prin schimbarea spectaculoasă a condiției, pornind de jos și ajungînd sus, spre încîntarea mulțimilor care speră veșnic în biletul cîștigător. Din motive numai de el știute, dintre care cel mai plauzibil pare apropierea morții, Dănilă face o favoare apropiaților și lumii în general și acceptă să povestească CUM a ajuns de la condiția de sărăntoc și idiotul satului la starea de bunăstare actuală.“(Alexandru Dabija)
“Pentru mulți dintre noi, azi, minunata poveste a lui Creangă poate să pară ceva nostim, dar de o dezarmantă naivitate. Însă, pe cărările și ocolișurile sale, se ivesc întrebări valabile de cînd lumea. De ce nu se potrivește o socoteală simplă, făcută acasă, cu cea din târg? De ce furtul de la cineva care a agonisit avere poate fi considerat un lucru justificat? De ce trage norocul doar la unii? De ce se spune că banul e ochiul dracului?
