Dancer in the Dark, celebrul film realizat de regizorul danez Lars von Trier, a avut premiera la Festivalul de Film de la Cannes în 2000, cucerind râvnitul Premiu Palme d’Or. Ulterior, au urmat nominalizări şi diverse premii la Globurile de Aur şi la Oscar, precum şi la alte festivaluri importante de gen.
Nevoia lui Lars von Trier de a sparge barierele stilistice este exprimată explicit. Artistul mărturiseşte: „Muzicalurile nu merg niciodată foarte departe înspre emoţie, deşi muzica este cel mai bun vehicul emoţional din câte există. Opera înseamnă: „Cânt, mor şi cânt că mor”, chestia asta devine aproape o abstracţiune. Este ceea ce mă interesează, să merg mai departe în direcţia acestei abstracţiuni, pentru că eu cred că cineaştii sunt lipsiţi în general de îndrăzneală şi că dezvoltarea cinematografului trece obligatoriu printr-un surplus de artificiu.”
Păstrând aceeaşi linie narativă, dramaturgul american Patrick Ellsworth transformă scenariul lui Lars von Trier într-o piesă de teatru ce păstrează, intrinsec, prin poveste, dimensiunea emoţionantă. Piesa a avut premiera mondială în 2012 în Germania, la Die Staatstheater din Stuttgart.
Patrick Ellsworth este absolvent al Secţiei de Scriere Dramatică de la celebrul colegiu newyorkez Juilliard School. Activitatea sa a pendulat între piese de teatru şi scenarii de film, unele dintre ele premiate. Cea mai notorie din scrierile sale dramatice de până acum rămâne adaptarea pe care a făcut-o după scenariul filmului lui Lars von Trier Dansând în noapte.

Dancer in the Dark, Lars von Trier’s famous film, premiered in Cannes in 2000, when it was awarded the famous Palme d’Or. The film was then nominated and awarded several times, at the Golden Globe and the Academy Awards to name just the most remarkable recognitions, and it was selected and screened in many film festivals.
Lars von Trier’s need to go beyond stylistic boundaries is explicit in his works. As he confesses, “Musicals never go too far in the field of emotions, even though emotions are best delivered by music.
In a few words, opera is ‘I sing, I die and sing about dying’, this has almost become an abstraction. That is exactly what I am interested in, taking this abstraction further, because I generally consider filmmakers to lack boldness and I believe that an excess of artifice is mandatory for the development of cinema.”
Keeping the same narrative line, American playwright Patrick Ellsworth transforms Trier’s script into a theatre play, inherently keeping the emotional dimension, through the story. The play premiered in Germany in 2012, on the stage of Die Staatstheater in Stuttgart.
Patrick Ellsworth studied Dramatic Writing at the famous Juilliard School in New York, and he wrote both stage plays and screenplays, some of them awarded worldwide. His most famous play continues to be Dancer in the Dark, an adaptation of Trier’s homonymous screeplay.
