Punctul orb

The play tells the story of a young woman named Niki (in Greek, “nike” means “victory”) wavering between a paralyzing depression and the need to go on living after the death of her husband. Looking for a way out of her suffocating narrow world, she leaves her job at the bank and finds comfort in the noisy indifference of the city’s big streets. Her encounter with a woman at the traffic lights reveals another reality… Likewise, there is something true in life that remains hidden in the dark aspects of our conscience. It is the presence of death, the sense of the inescapable. Life, like experience, needs to be completed by the reassuring mind, in order to be fully realized.

Mavritsakis’s play is attempting to enter that “blind spot” of conscience. And at the same time it enters the space of universal wondering: wondering about violence, exploitation, loneliness, human fate. Niki witnesses the truth hidden in this “blind spot” through her experience of her husband’s death. She lives in a daze in a confused world, yet she seems to possess a rare sharpness and clarity of mind.

Death has cast his shadow on things, but at the same time it has revealed their paradigms. The orbits of Niki, the Woman at the traffic lights, the Butcher’s young assistant, the Girl, they all cross, as they all struggle to answer the questions of their own universe. These are urgent, deep-rooted questions that need answers meant to prove that the very human fabric is not to be irrevocably ruptured. Niki is just as capable of revealing the darkest secret of life as she is of radiating the light of catharsis, of innocence, but also of the Final Judgement.
