Arthur Miller, laureat al Premiului Pulitzer pentru dramaturgie, adaptează în anul 1950 piesa Un duşman al poporului de Henrick Ibsen. Doctorul Thomas Stockmann, protagonistul piesei, descoperă că apa folosită pentru băile locale este contaminată şi, pentru a nu fi pusă în pericol sănătatea turiştilor, se hotărăşte să facă public acest lucru. Dar, din moment ce principala sursă de venit a oraşului este reprezentată de aceste băi, comunitatea şi autorităţile se luptă să îl reducă la tăcere.
Apărându-şi convingerile, Stockmann îşi asumă responsabilitatea faţă de ceilalţi, primind eticheta de „duşman al poporului”.
„Am convingerea că această piesă poate fi vie pentru noi datorită temei care reprezintă, după părerea mea, tema centrală a vieţii noastre sociale de astăzi. Apare întrebarea dacă garanţiile democratice menite să protejeze minorităţile trebuie uitate în momente de criză. Şi altă întrebare, mai personală, dacă viziunea cuiva despre adevăr trebuie considerată o sursă de vinovăţie în momentul în care o mulţime de oameni o condamnă ca fiind o minciună periculoasă şi diabolică.
Este o temă persistentă – de fapt, este posibil să fie cea mai persistentă dintre temele lui Ibsen – deoarece niciodată nu a existat o societate capabilă să sprijine individul care insistă că are dreptate, în timp ce majoritatea susţine contrariul.” (Arthur Miller – prefaţa la Un duşman al poporului)

An Enemy of the People
An Enemy of the People, a play by Pulitzer Prize winner Arthur Miller adapted from the drama by Henrik Ibsen in 1950, focuses on a conflict between brothers Stockmann and a conflict between the freedom and the suppression of speech. Doctor Thomas Stockmann comes to suspect that the water that poured into the Springs might be contaminated and decides to make the news public, in order to protect the tourists’ health. But the municipal baths are the main source of income of the city, which is why the community and the authorities fight to reduce the doctor to silence.
Yet Stockmann will continue to publicly state his opinions, eventually being called “an enemy of the people”.
“I believed this play could be alive for us because its central theme is, in my opinion, the central theme of our social life today. Simply, it is the question of whether the democratic guarantees protecting political minorities ought to be set aside in time of crisis. More personally, it is the question of whether one’s vision of the truth ought to be a source of guilt at a time when the mass of men condemn it as a dangerous and devilish lie.
It is an enduring theme –in fact possibly the most enduring of all Ibsen’s themes –because there never was, nor will there ever be, an organized society able to countenance calmly the individual who insists that he is right while the vast majority is absolutely wrong.” (Arthur Miller, Preface to An Enemy of the People)
